Self-Esteem, Self-Confidence and Self-Efficacy - Do You Know the Difference?

Self-esteem and self-confidence are often confused. They are not the same. There are some fine but crucial points of difference.

What is Self- Esteem?

Self- esteem is valuing oneself unconditionally, if you are alive you can have full self- esteem. Go on, you have permission. Self-esteem is valuing yourself as a human being. When a baby comes in to the world, it can't do anything. It can't clean up after itself, feed itself or even stay alive without help. Yet we value it absolutely, we say it is special, unique and precious. And it is! You were a baby like this once, your value and worth is intrinsic. It is there all the time, no-one can take it away from you. If you think you have low self esteem, just remember the baby and how precious and special it is, then apply that awe and gratitude to yourself. You are alive, you have the powers of thought, emotion, speech & movement. You can do things! When you think about the amazing freedom of being alive and being able to think, feel, speak and behave as you want, this is awe inspiring. Remember to be in awe of your human powers and remember how special and unique you are. No-one is quite like you. No matter what you do or who you are you can esteem yourself.

Self-Esteem, Self-Confidence and Self-Efficacy - Do You Know the Difference?

What is Self-Confidence?

Self-Confidence is having the confidence that you can do this or that thing. It is about your skills and performance and is conditional. If you are competent at a certain skill, you can be confident that you can do that. Confidence is conditional upon you being good at the said skill. If you are not good at it, there is no use being confident. If you are confident that you can skydive buy you've never done it before and know nothing about it, that is recipe for disaster. Confidence without competence will make you a fool. Your confidence will improve naturally as your competence increases. There is another element that you can be confident in that can help you improve your confidence at any skill...

What is Self-Efficacy?

Self-Efficacy is the understanding and belief in yourself that comes from becoming confident at a number of different skills. As you learn and master each new skill, your confidence in your ability to learn becomes stronger and you start to believe in your own efficacy. The thinking goes like this: "I've learnt to walk, talk, think for myself, drive a car, look after myself, insert other skills here, so I'm able to learn anything. I may not know how to do it right now, but I know how to find someone to teach me and I know how to spend the time and resources necessary to learn a new skill, so yes, I could do anything!

Self- efficacy is wonderful feeling. It is often confused with self-confidence, the difference being efficacy is the confidence in your own learning skills, it has nothing to do with any one particular performance so it becomes unconditional. You can have a high self-esteem and a high self-efficacy all the time, unconditionally, however your self-confidence would be different depending on how competent you are at each different thing.

It is very important to separate self-esteem from the other two because if your sense of worth and value ( your self-esteem ) is riding on how good you are at something then you can feel great one day and terrible the next. This does not make for a very happy person. You will never be excellent at everything, because human beings are always learning, and that's ok. You can feel good about yourself even if you lose a sports match or don't perform as well as you would like at any one thing, because you know that success or or failure at that one thing does not affect your worth and value as a person. You are worth so much more than the total of everything you do.

Now that you understand the difference between the three, how do you think you're going?

If you were to give yourself a rating out of 10 for each...

How high is your self-esteem? How high is your self-confidence to do something you're really good at? How high is your self-confidence to do something that you've just started to learn? How much do you believe you can learn anything you put your mind to ( Self-efficacy )?
Exercises to improve each...

You can improve your self-esteem by being kind to yourself. Say daily positive affirmations and remember that you have powers and uniqueness that no-one else has. Take a moment each night to celebrate your successes and remember how special and unique you are.

Improve your self-confidence by practicing whichever skill or performance you would like to be more confident at, when you are competent, or masterful at that performance the confidence will come. Keep practicing!

Improve your self-efficacy by thinking about, and listing, all the things in your life that you've learnt, from the smallest to the biggest. Think about the process of learning, find the similarities in the learning journey. You know this journey. You know the steps, so even if you don't know exactly what you will be doing, you can be confident that you can handle it.

Do you esteem yourself? Are you grateful and appreciative of the powers that you have as a human being?

Define Personal Development Plan

How would you define a personal development plan? Well I would define it as a plan you make for yourself to achieve something in your life. What do you wish to accomplish? Do you want to get a new career? Do you want to start an online business? Whatever it is you wish to do you will need to define a personal development plan and put begin to put it into action.

So let us begin to check out the steps to be able to define your personal development plan:

Self Improvement

1.) Set some realistic goals for yourself. These goals must be something you truly wish to experience. Something that will motivate you if you do not set motivating goals then the chances of you not being able to overcome obstacles when you encounter them increases.

Define Personal Development Plan

2.) Take action. Once you set your motivating goals, now it is time to begin to take action to move closer to them. without action you can not expect to achieve anything different in your life.

3.) Be open to opportunities as you begin to set your goals you will begin to notice opportunities that come your way. After all what you give your attention to will continue to grow. Always be open to the opportunities; and do not be afraid to take action. When you do take action if do not be afraid to change your course if something does not work out the way you expect it to. Sometimes we must be willing to take detours to reach our destinations.

4.) Celebrate your success. We all require acknowledgment for our successes. If you do not receive acknowledgment; you can become discouraged and quit working towards your goals. So you must learn how to celebrate every little success. Even if you are the only one who notices it.

5.) Start a success journal. One of the things I was taught when I began my personal development journey. One of the most important things to do is to begin writing down all your successes throughout the day.

Some of the success you can write down in your journal can be:

I walked the dogs today I stopped by the grocery store today and picked up some items we needed I cleaned the house today I spent time reading today I worked on my online business

These are just some examples you can write in your success journal. As you can see you are learning how to celebrate everything that you do on a normal daily basis. The more successes you see written down in your new journal; the better you will feel. The journal will also give you the confindence to continue towards your goals.

6.) Believe in yourself. This is an important step because without the belief in yourself you will not have the courage to pursue your goals.

7.) Visualize your goals. Always visualize the outcomes of the goals you wish to experience. The more you can see yourself reaching and having the goals; the quicker they will become a reality. If you learn to mix emotion along with the visualization this will speed up the process as well.

8.) Find a mentor. If you can find someone who has become successful in what you desire, read and study as much as you can to find out what habits they developed and what they did on a daily basis to have the success.

As you begin to apply these eight steps you will not only begin to be able to define a personal development plan; you will understand how to put it into action. You will also begin your journey to creating the life of your dreams.

How to Find Motivation When Something Is Holding You Back

Have you ever felt like there is more to life, like there was something you are meant to do but aren't, like there is something missing?

I have.

Self Improvement

There was a period in my life where I was stuck with this empty feeling. A feeling of inadequacy so deep that it had me questioning the purpose in which I was put on this planet. I didn't want to work. I didn't want to play. I didn't want to do anything. This desolate feeling caused me to do a critical review of the things in my life. I began to take a closer look at my family, friends and hobbies and quickly identified I measured success the wrong way.

How to Find Motivation When Something Is Holding You Back

I measured success with substance.

During these gloomy days I spent the bulk of my time complaining, thinking negatively about everything, quit when the going got tough, and even worse stopped dreaming. These were the hardest days of my life. To make matters worse I thought I had everything I wanted.

Who knew that getting just what you want could be so far away from having what you need?

One day I was sitting at my job, hating every moment, when a revelation so powerful hit me and nearly knocked me off my feet. I was literally slumped over like I received a severe blow to the lower abdomen. The revelation was simple and eye opening.

There is more to me than this.

I was more than my debt, more than my fear, more than my education or lack thereof, more than the sad hourly wage I was making at the time, more than my mistakes, more than my hurt, and my favorite more than a conqueror. Guess what?

You are too!

It took a lot of prayer, reflection and soul searching but I found what was missing. I found purpose and it wasn't difficult to find once I knew where to look for it. It was my gift, my natural talent that made the difference. My gift made room for me.

A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men. Proverbs 18:16

So, if you were anything like I was, I have some tips to help you fill that empty void.

1. Pray, meditate

Guidance is key to make sure you are going in the right direction. Make sure you have a clear mind and be patient to wait for the answer.

2. Do what comes easy.

What are you good at? What do you do in your free time outside of Madden? What comes to you naturally?

3. Network to recognize your strengths

Use your friends and family to point out your strong points. Their point of view is a lot different from yours and their perspective can give you some useful insight.

4. Practice your art.

There is no greater shortcoming than a person who refuses to practice a gift.

5. Utilize all of your talents!

If you don't use it you might lose it.

I don't care who you are there is something inside of you so powerful that is just lying dormant waiting to be unleashed. Whatever it is, don't keep it buried.

Invest in your gift because....there is more to you than this.

How will you find your hidden potential?
